A right out of the piazza will take you to the first of the two 15th-century Piccolomini palazzi (Palazzo Piccolomini designed for the Renaissance humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini (whose career as Pope Pius II is detailed in the Duomo Libreria) who also commissioned its architect, Bernardo Rossellino, to redesign an ideal city for his hometown of Pienza. Today, other than the State Archive, it houses the Biccherne, a collection of 103 wooden account book covers painted by the best of Sienese artists between the 13th and 18th centuries. Before heading in, check out the grandiose Logge del Papa, opposite to your left, another of Piccolomini’s Renaissance commissions, this time to sculptor and architect Antonio Federighi in 1462.
